Effects of Child Poverty Reductions on Child Protective Services Involvement and Placement

To register for this training, you must use CASA of Lexington’s program code, 10224.

In this webinar we will explore the potential to reduce child welfare system involvement through the implementation of poverty-reduction strategies based on existing social policy packages (e.g. Earned Income Tax Credit, SNAP, federal minimum wage). In 2019 the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a “roadmap” to reduce child poverty by as much as half through the implementation of a series of social policy packages.

Subsequent to this release, a team of researchers undertook a study to simulate the reductions in Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement and foster care placements that are likely to result from implementation of three of the NAS policy packages when adjusting for household income. It is the methodology and results of this recent study we will be discussing.

Defining the Line: Setting and Maintaining Healthy Boundaries

To register for this training, you must use CASA of Lexington’s program code, 10224.

Maintaining appropriate boundaries is fundamental to managing one's health and well-being. Having healthy boundaries is key to managing stress, avoiding burnout and supporting sound advocacy work. In this webinar we will:

·         Explore what boundaries are, and where attendees are with them

·         Identify and recognize structural and individual risk factors

·         Discuss why setting boundaries so hard and what are the resources and tools available to assist in developing one's personal set of boundaries

Collaborative Strategies to Improve Outcomes for Adolescents Affected by Substance Use Disorders and Child Welfare

To register for this training, you must use CASA of Lexington’s program code, 10224.

Adolescence is a stage of life with specific health and developmental needs. A successful transition from childhood to adulthood can be difficult even under the best circumstances. For youth in foster care, particularly those affected by substance use disorders (SUDs), this transition can be further complicated by a lack of services and supports tailored to this stage of development.

This presentation will review the common assumptions and biases about adolescents involved in child welfare and detail the unique risks and needs of adolescents and transitional aged youth affected by substance use disorders, delinquency, and trauma. This presentation will highlight the importance of collaboration, examine collaborative strategies to engage adolescents and their supports, and identify strategies to promote resilience, recovery, and positive youth development to improve outcomes for adolescents and their families.

As a result of attending this training participants will:

·         Be able to identify common attitudes, assumptions, and biases about adolescents involved in child welfare.

·         Understand the unique needs of adolescents affected by substance use disorders and will identify key strategies to promote resilience, recovery, and positive youth development.

·         Understand the importance of collaboration when working with adolescents and transitional aged youth affected by substance use disorders in the child welfare and juvenile justice system.

Be able to identify concrete strategies to engage adolescents and their supports to improve outcomes for adolescents and their families.

Empathic Strain & Secondary Trauma 101: Understanding the Essentials

Empathic Strain & Secondary Trauma 101: Understanding the Essentials

We pay an emotional price for doing the work that we do. Repeated and chronic exposure to large volumes of difficult stories can erode our sense of empathy for others. We can become hardened and desensitized to suffering – or conversely, we can become swallowed up by their pain.

Since the demand often outweighs what we can offer, we may find ourselves experiencing moral distress when we cannot help everyone who comes to us. What is the impact of this on our physical and emotional well-being? How can we stay well while doing difficult work?

This session provides a foundation for understanding these very real “occupational hazards.”

•       Level of Exposure: Assess what elements are risk factors for you

•       Where Are You Now? Learn how to identify and recognize warning signs in yourself and others

•       Assess your current strategies at home and at work

•       Make a plan: Steps to address your vulnerabilities
