Self-Care: Chair Yoga

  • CASA of Lexington 3245 Loch Ness Dr. Lexington, KY 40517 (map)

Monthly CEU Training

UPDATE: This training has been changed to entirely virtual; no in-person attendance is available.

This training will be led by CASA Volunteer Manager and chair yoga instructor Gudrun Allen.

Chair Yoga is a specific form of yoga practiced sitting on a chair or standing using a chair for support. The poses are often adaptations of asanas in modern yoga as exercise. For this CEU, we will spend an hour together, starting with a check in on how we are feeling, followed by gentle movement warming, stretching and strengthening our bodies, and finishing up with a relaxation segment.

This form of yoga may be helpful to anyone who is coming back to exercise after a health set back, to those who may have changes in mobility and balance, to someone who needs a reset while sitting at their desk during the workday, and anyone who wants to spend some time on self-care. All levels are welcome to this practice, to move and breathe together, whether in person in a small group setting (following current covid-19 guidelines) or through virtual access.

Plan to wear comfortable clothes and choose a stable chair without wheels. If you are practicing in a wheelchair, you might lock the wheels for stability. You may also practice sitting on a firm couch. Ideally, you would be able to plant your feet firmly on the floor, with your knees bent at 90 degrees. You might also have a few pillows and a blanket handy for additional comfort.

Disclaimer: If at any time during the class, you feel discomfort or strain, gently come out of the posture. You may rest at any time during the class. It is important in yoga that you listen to your body and respect its limits on any given day.

Participants understand that yoga is not a substitute for medical attention, examination, diagnosis, or treatment.
